Scholarship Purpose: The Karen Griffith Parker Scholarship was established in 2007 and funded annually with a $1,000 gift from Karen's daughter, Julie Smith and her husband, Keith. In the spring of 1954 Karen was diagnosed with Type I Diabetes. Karen was presented with the opportunity of a scholarship, so in the fall of 1958 she entered Cottage Hospital School of Nursing. She graduated from Nursing School in May 1961, started her career at Cottage Hospital, and received her RN designation in September the same year. Each candidate for a Karen Parker Scholarship must be or have: A. Accepted for enrollment in the Mennonite College of Nursing at ISU accelerated bachelor's in nursing option contingent upon the successful completion of any deficient prerequisite coursework. B. Does not qualify for need-based financial assistance. C. Used for educational expenses. Assets from this endowment are invested in the ISU Endowment Investment Pool.
