Eleanor Kong Memorial Endowed Scholarship in Education

Scholarship Purpose: The Eleanor Kong Memorial Endowed Scholarship in Education was established in 2011 by the family of Eleanor Kong who wanted to make sure that her life and commitments were remembered and honored in perpetuity. Eleanor came to the U.S. with her family in 1991. Eleanor became a Golden Apple Scholar in 1993 and completed her life-long dream of becoming a teacher when she earned her undergraduate degree in elementary education from Illinois State University in 1997. She taught in the Chicago Public School System before she returned to Illinois State University to teach and to complete her graduate degree. Her life ended in September 1999 at the young age of 24. Even though she was unable to fulfill her ultimate goal of completing a doctoral degree in education, this scholarship will allow her dream to continue to help others to become teachers who impact the lives of their students.

Financial Need: This scholarship requires a student to have a Financial Need to be eligible to receive the scholarship. In order to establish "Financial Need", a student must file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). You can file the FAFSA at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/.

This scholarship is not open to International Students.

Letter of Reference: For this scholarship application 2 letters of reference are required.

Miscellaneous Information

• Applicant must be enrolled as an upper-class student majoring in elementary education or a gradaute student in the Curriculum and Instruction program in good standing in the College of Education at Illinois State University.
• Applicant must have plans to become a teacher, with a demonstrated strong interest in teaching as a professional career.
• Applicant must submit an essay, describing how he or she has demonstrated a commitment to promoting diversity on campus, and how the he or she plans to use teaching to make a significant impact on the education of children.
• Applicant must submit two professional letters of recommendation from faculty who are familiar with the student's performance.
• Scholarship will be awarded for the 2012-2013 school year.
