Scholarship Purpose: The John P. Freese Endowed Fund was established to support an undergraduate student with a declared major in political science. Preference will be given to a student interested in pursuing a degree in law. John earned a bachelor's degree in political science from Illinois State University in 1969 and a juris doctorate from the University of Michigan in 1972. He served as a judge advocate in the U.S. Navy from 1973 to 1976 and then returned to Bloomington to establish a private law practice from 1976 to 1982. The endowment was started in 1997 by family, friends, and colleagues to recognize the 50th birthday of John P. Freese, chief judge for the Eleventh Judicial Circuit Court in McLean County.
