Jannes (Teply) and Dr. Gary Weede Endowed Elementary Education Scholarship

Scholarship Purpose: Jannes and Gary Weede were first generation college graduates coming from families of modest means. They had to work their way through all of their earned degrees. Jannes taught for 24 years at Fairview Elementary School in Normal and had the privilege of supervising numerous Illinois State University student teachers during her teaching career. During his teaching career in the Industrial Technology Department at Illinois State, Gary developed a plastics technology program, served as graduate coordinator and taught various manufacturing and graduate courses in Engineering Technology. He retired after 28 years at the University. The Weedes possess a strong desire to provide support to students with financial need in the College of Education at Illinois State University. The purpose of this fund is to assist education majors as they pursue their dreams of becoming teachers.

Essay: An Essay is required towards applying for this scholarship.

Financial Need: This scholarship requires a student to have a Financial Need to be eligible to receive the scholarship. In order to establish "Financial Need", a student must file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). You can file the FAFSA at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/.

Leadership: There is a leadership experience requirement in applying for this scholarship.

Letter of Reference: For this scholarship application 2 letters of reference are required.

Miscellaneous Information

• Recipient shall be a Junior or Senior student enrolled in good standing at Illinois State University and majoring in Elementary Education in the College of Education.
• Recipient shall demonstrate leadership skills trhough high school and college extra curricular activities, part-time jobs, community volunteering, and leadership activities as well as exhibit potential through exceptional enthusiam in the classroom as determined by the scholarship selection committee.
• Recipient shall submit an original essay of not more than 500 words conveying his or her philosophy of education and teaching that will be shared with Jannes and Gary Weeds.
• Recipient shall submit two letters of recommendtion that will be shared with Jannes and Gary Weeds.
