From a very early age it was evident that Mary Alice was interested in physical activity of all types, was well-coordinated, and very competitive. When expressing an interest in becoming a physical education teacher, Illinois State University was recommended as the best choice. Upon completing her undergraduate work Mary Alice taught high school and junior high school and coached softball and field hockey.
