Scholarship Purpose: This scholarship was established by Jean and Randy Kaufman and friends in 2009 in memory of Jean's mother, Mary Alice Katschke. The purpose is to provide financial assistance to students at Illinois State who intend to become elementary education teachers. Mary earned her B.S. in 1952 and taught in public schools until her retirement in 1994. She believed it was important for children to learn to read at an early age.
