Nan Schuman Klein Future Teacher Scholarship

Scholarship Purpose: Nancy Jo Schuman graduated from Illinois State University in 1973, earning a B.S. in education. She taught elementary school for more than four years and continued to take classes at the University to earn her M.S. in special education. Before she could complete her degree, she moved to California where she entered the business field and became a human resources executive. Many of the skills that she learned at Illinois State enabled her to lead and train her teams of employees to achieve success in their careers. Meanwhile she married and had one child. Nan never forgot her teaching years and has created this scholarship to support students in their dreams of becoming teachers. She also has a special regard for persons who come into teaching having been in a previous career. Those individuals will receive special attention in the application process.

Miscellaneous Information

• Applicant must be enrolled as a new freshmen, or as an upper-class student in good standing at Illinois State University, majoring in one of the programs offered by the Department of Curriculum and Instructions.
• Applicant must have pans to become a teacher, with a demonstrated strong interest in teaching as a professional career.
• Applicant must submit an essay which discusses the student's passion to become a teacher.
• Applicant must demonstrate leadership through involvment with extracurricular and or community services.
• An applicant who leaves a successful career to enter the university to become a teacher will receive specail attention in the selction process.
• If applicant s are equally qualified, preference is to be given to students who are from Crete, Streator, or Danville, Il. or from California.
