Scholarship Purpose: The Willard J. McCarthy Engineering Technology Endowed Scholarship provides financial assistance to a student who is enrolled as a major in engineering technology in the Department of Technology at Illinois State University. Willard "Bill" J. McCarthy was associate professor in the Department of Industrial Technology at Illinois State University from 1955-1980. He became nationally known as an author of two text books, Machine Tool Technology and Metalwork Technology and Practice. He was recognized by his peers as an expert in the field and was asked to author a major article titled "Machine Tools" for the 15th edition of the Encyclopedia Britannica. His teaching ability was unequaled. He retired in 1980 and is highly praised by the many alumni that benefited from knowing and learning from him. The scholarship was established by family and friends to honor Bill.
